Recycling at Its Cutest!

Posted December 2nd, 2008 by Sue Steiner

Daddy's Old Shirt into a DressThat’s the , name of Devona Brazier’s blog in which she shares with us her life as a wife, a mom to 2 little girls, a visionary  and a person passionate about recycling and being a good steward.  Devona likes to sew and create.   Where some people see hand me downs and discarded material Devona sees opportunities for new life and purpose.  An example would be when Devona came across some old men’s dress shirts.  She became inspired to use the recycled material to make darling toddler dresses for her girls.  The idea caught on and she now custom makes dresses out of ‘Daddy’s Old Shirt’.

You’ll have an opportunity to meet Devona and see more of her creations on Friday from 10:00-2:00 in the Buggy Barn at Lehman’s.   Click on ‘Events’ at the top of this page to see what else we have scheduled for demos and activities.  You’ll not want to miss Christmas Open House this weekend!

Beeswax Ornaments

Beeswax Ornaments

On a typical Saturday at Lehman’s you can find an Ohio Arts and Crafts Guild member conducting educational and entertaining demos for visitors to the store. We’ve been fortunate to draw from local talent and offer a wide range of demos from fiber arts to woodturning to Amish landscape painting and lots in between! Tomorrow Holly Frantz of Two Sister’s Wool will be in to demonstrate wool rug hooking. Dennis Lipp treated us last week to winterscape Amish scenes in oil painting. Angela Seymour of Longehedges Fiber Farm shared the steps needed process raw alpaca wool into hand dyed and spun yarn. Theresa of Mind Our Beeswax used Lehman’s molds to make heirloom quality beeswax Christmas ornaments.

Still to come on the schedule is whimsical cat and dog art, working with pewter, ‘repurposing’ with vintage fabric and more. The Events Calendar link at the top of this page can be used to help plan your trip to Amish Country. Spend the day, enjoy the sights and be inspired!

Fiber Art Demo

Fiber Arts

Fiber Arts

As the temperatures dropped this week and a definite chill set in many of us found ourselves reaching for a nice, cozy sweater.  Soon it will be time to  buddled up in scarves and mittens, thick socks and hats as the snow begins to fly.  When these items are made with natural fiber it becomes a real treat to bundle up rather than a chore.  Natural fiber is luxurious as well as practical.  It is timely then the Ohio Arts and Crafts Guild Demo this week features natural fiber from a local farm that raises alpacas and angora goats .  If you are a knitter or just enjoy learning new things you’ll want to stop by and meet Angela Seymour of Longhedges Fiber Farm.  She will be at the Kidron store demonstrating the steps needed to take to take the raw wool from her animals to a finished product.  Learn about the animal and unique qualitites of different fiber as you are shown how the process unfolds.

In our high tech world this down to earth activity of taking something from the farm to produce something with our hands has the ability to not only calm and soothe but to comfort as well.   Its no wonder fiber arts are so rewarding and popular!

The events calendar on the top of this page list similar educational and entertaining demonstrations now until the end of the year.

Time to make the food!

Carissa and the Crust

Carissa and the Crust

One of the first things that I noticed when I moved to this little corner of Northeast Ohio is that Sunday is NOT a good day to get things done that require going to a store. Obviously there are exceptions like the larger chain stores, for the most part, things are closed and the streets rolled up on Sunday. Believe me, this is a small price to pay for the return you get from living in Wayne County Ohio. So Sunday is as it should be in our household, family day, we still get things done, clean up the house (full time job), and cooking.

We have become quite familiar with the concept of a crock pot in a world dominated by a lack of hours in the day. You cannot lose, dump everything into this magic appliance in the morning and several hours later – out comes a dish that even the most picky eater (my son) cannot stick a nose up at. So the morning starts out with breakfast. Then the crock pots are put together and begin their journey, tempting our senses all day.

We’ve been busy lining up a whole assortment of educational and interesting arts and crafts demos by Ohio Arts and Crafts Guild members for folks visiting Kidron, Ohio. We are just now heading into the peak of fall foliage as the trees begin to hint at the beautiful display of colors we can expect in the next week or so. As you enjoy the scenery on the drive to the store you can stop in and visit with local artist Dennis Lipp as he paints rural landscapes and local farms as part of his demo.

Last Sat. Theresa of ‘Mind Our Beeswax’ brought along her beeswax and handpainted Christmas ornaments. In the photo you see some of the process Theresa uses to create beautiful, heirloom quality ornaments. We pictured some Lehman’s molds which can be used if you’d like to give this a try at home.

Beeswax Ornaments Demo

Mind Our Beeswax

Mind Our Beeswax

Theresa Kramer and her husband are scheduled for an Ohio Arts and Crafts demonstration in the Buggy Barn at Lehman’s this Saturday.  I asked her to share with us a little about what she does so Theresa wrote:
My craft of making beeswax ornaments dates back to the sixteenth century.  German bakers started saving their bits of beeswax by melting it and pouring it in their cookie and candy molds.  They then used the decorations on their Christmas trees. German immigrants brought this art form to eastern Pennsylvania in the late seventeenth century.  I continue the tradition today.  I work out of my home and do local art and craft fairs.  I also have a web site:  www.mindourbeeswax.com.  The photo is of me and my husband Jim at Yankee Peddler last month.
This demo is part of an ongoing series of arts and crafts demos that will be at the store in the Buggy Barn.  To see future demos and other events go to the Events link at the top of this page.

Dairy Cows and Blimps

Posted September 30th, 2008 by Galen Lehman

The Goodyear blimp over my barnNortheast Ohio is home of some of the prettiest farmland in America…and the fattest flying thing in the world.A few days ago we heard the loud buzzing that could only be caused by one thing:  Killer bees on the attack or the Goodyear blimp flying overhead.    Since we were pretty sure it wasn’t the bees, we rushed outside to watch it float by.  We’ve seen it before, but a sight like that never loses its appeal.

Two nights later, I attended a business association dinner where I met the woman who schedules blimp flights.  She knew which blimp it was (the Spirit of Innovation) and told me it was fleeing bad weather in Florida.  She also knew enough about the flight plan to know about where I lived in Wayne County!

With apologies to everyone else who lives in an area of beautiful farmland with regular blimp fly-overs, I have to say that Kidron must be just about the greatest place in the world!  How cool is it that I get to see horse-drawn vehicles, blimps and rolling hills covered with spectacular autumn leaves every fall?

This is the best time of year to visit Wayne County!  And, here are a few of my favorite spots (in no particular order):

Great locally owned inns: The Amish Door, Carlisle Inn and Inn at Honey Run. For RV’s, try Evergreen RV Park.  If you’re flying in, use Akron Canton (CAK) or Cleveland Hopkins (CLE).

Great shopping: Coblentz Chocolates, Homestead Furniture, P Graham Dunn, Walnut Creek Cheese

Fun activities: Rolling Ridge Ranch, Yoder’s Amish Farm, The Farm at Walnut Creek

Kidron attractions: Nut Tree Furniture, Kratzer Furniture, Eastwood Furniture, Kidron Auction, Hearthside Quilt Shoppe, Shisler’s Cheese, Kidron Town and Country

Northeast Ohio attractions (1 hour or so from Lehman’s): Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Inventor’s Hall of Fame, Football Hall of Fame, Living Bible Wax Museum

(This list is not all inclusive…if I missed your local business, I’m very sorry!)
