Deer in the garden

Posted August 6th, 2008 by Greg

Note from Web Master: The following was posted as a comment to a post. I have moved it to the questions section. My sincerest apologies to SouthernFlower for the difficulties and will respond personally.

Hello. I am new to this blog, but am not sure how to post a question. Unfortunately, this is not a resonse to this post, however, I am hoping someone can help me with a problem. I have deer getting into my garden. I really don’t want to erect a 7 foot fence or use any smelly chemicals to get rid of them. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

If anyone could help me with this I would really appreciate it. I love sauerkraut but my system doesn’t like sour things anymore. What I am looking for is a sweet sauerkraut recipe. I have had it before but the lady who sold it is not around any more. Thank you.

Keeping our cat’s food from other cats?

Posted January 8th, 2008 by MikeAndLeslie

We have an outdoor cat. We provided a heated insulated shelter for it (small plastic insulated dog house with door, and electric pet heating pad). During the cold winter, we put its food and water inside to keep it all from freezing. However, overnight other cats seem to show up from nowhere. Where do they all live?

Along came a dominate male that sprayed the shelter and area. Our cat now does not want to go anywhere near the shelter.

I cleaned up the shelter in our bathtub, using diluted vinegar. Our cat used it for two days until the same dominate male showed up and sprayed the area again. Now, nothing we do can entice our cat to return to the shelter and provisions – even though I have re-cleaned the shelter and area.

Thus my question. How can I care for our outdoor cat without attracting the neighborhood cats? Short of making sure the dominate male has no more bad days on this earth, is there a way to keep him away?

Thanks for any suggestion.
Mike

Good Outside Dog for Chickens

Posted January 1st, 2008 by kkaaaj@aol.com

I was wondering if there’s such a thing as a good breed dog for chickens…to protect them from other dogs/critters.  I have lost a couple of chickens recently and I think it was mostly dogs that got them but we also have other critters around us like coyotes, bobcats, possums, raccoons.  I would really appreciate any input on this.  Thanks.

Instant potato sourdough starter

Posted December 17th, 2007 by DBirch

Years ago I had a recipe for a sourdough bread that used sugar, warm water, and instant potato flakes to “feed” the starter. In searching on the web for a sourdough starter, I ran across a link to countrylife.net. However, I could not find the recipe on the website. If anyone has the recipe for the starter, please respond as I would like to make some for the Christmas holiday.
