Recycling Crafts w/ a Garden Theme

Posted April 13th, 2009 by Sue Steiner

We are gearing up to begin another round of arts and crafts demos at the store in Kidron in the Buggy Barn from now until the end of the year.  The founder’s of Clever Nesting along with other Ohio Arts and Crafts Guild members will take turns doing demos in which they share with you their skills, knowledge and crafts.   Colleen and Devonna have a refreshing way to get people enthused about recycling.  Read on to get a glimpse as to what they do….

“Colleen and Devona are passionate about conservation and creativity. They enthusiastically want to share this lifestyle with others, hence, the Clever Nesting website was developed in early 2009. At Clever Nesting you’ll find posts about crafting techniques, full craft tutorials, and links to other great crafting resources. There are design ideas for the home and techniques for the garden, many of which reuse and repurpose items often thrown away.  Plus, read artist interviews who also share the Clever Nesting vision…a world where people do more with less.

Off the web Clever Nesting is active in the Greater Akron, Ohio community spreading the creative and repurposing spirit by hosting local events and teaching craft classes and demonstrations.”

To see dates for demos please click on the Event Calendar on this web site.  Clever Nestings demo this Saturday  they will be doing ‘Recycling Crafts using a Gardening Theme’.  You can expect to see seed catalogue paper crafts, plastic grocery bag basket weaving, and recycled coffee bean bags seed starter pots.

Farm Animal Art and Mural Painting

Posted April 8th, 2009 by Sue Steiner

Beginning April 17, 2009 I will be back in the Buggy Barn most Fridays working on the farm animal murals.  My name is Sue Steiner and I am a local equine and animal artist.  I have this wonderful opportunity to do what I love best- paint animals in an authentic Amish Buggy Barn.  My job has been to add atmosphere and interest.  You’ll find old farm implements, garden tools and other farm related items and a barn full of farm animal murals!   I am inviting input as to what animal needs to go in next.  (There are still blank spots– can’t have that!!)  There is something in every farmer that knows you MUST fill your barn all the way!

I have a young colt mural I need to put some finishing touches to but after that I am ready to move to another spot.  In the Buggy Barn  in addition to the young colt we have a flock of  roosting hens, Bess; the family milk cow, a couple buggy horses and the team of Amish work horses Rex and Roy at the hitching post.   So we are fairly heavily slanted in the horse department but want to be an equal opportunity farm so lets hear it from you as to what is your favorite farm animal?  You are welcome to comment here.  I also will have a suggestion box in the Buggy Barn so if you are in the store please stop in, see the murals and give us your opinion!

Tune in to Cleveland’s Fox 8 on Friday, March 27, at 10 am for That’s Life with Robin Swoboda.  Robin and crew spent a day at Lehman’s, learning everything you wanted to know (but were afraid to ask) about gardening.  Titled “From Plant to Plate,” the segment features the Lehman family and employees and local organic gardener Karen Gesier, as well as a store tour.  Robin’s show is always entertaining and educational — don’t miss it!

Hobby Farms Photo Shoot

Hobby Farms Photo Shoot

Lehman’s has often been ‘in the news’ over the years but last Friday was a special day for me. It was a day that I got to be in the spotlight.  Jodi Miller, a free lance photographer from the Columbus area drove up and spent the day with me on a photo shoot for Hobby Farms Home magazine. I am an equine and animal artist living in the Kidron/Dalton area. I painted the farm animal and Hitching Post murals at Lehman’s over the last couple years during store hours as part of Lehman’s arts and crafts demos in the Buggy barn.

Recycling at Its Cutest!

Posted December 2nd, 2008 by Sue Steiner

Daddy's Old Shirt into a DressThat’s the , name of Devona Brazier’s blog in which she shares with us her life as a wife, a mom to 2 little girls, a visionary  and a person passionate about recycling and being a good steward.  Devona likes to sew and create.   Where some people see hand me downs and discarded material Devona sees opportunities for new life and purpose.  An example would be when Devona came across some old men’s dress shirts.  She became inspired to use the recycled material to make darling toddler dresses for her girls.  The idea caught on and she now custom makes dresses out of ‘Daddy’s Old Shirt’.

You’ll have an opportunity to meet Devona and see more of her creations on Friday from 10:00-2:00 in the Buggy Barn at Lehman’s.   Click on ‘Events’ at the top of this page to see what else we have scheduled for demos and activities.  You’ll not want to miss Christmas Open House this weekend!

Seat of my Pants at Lehman’s

Posted November 18th, 2008 by Diane

As I have been working in the marketing area of Lehman’s, I have found one thing as a powerful selling point: word-of-mouth. People respond well when others who have used the product tell them their experience. A whole blog community has been started up on that concept. As a result, I have something I want to share.

This weekend at our store in Kidron, one of the artisans that is going to be there is Seat of my Pants. Jen Kindbom creates beautful and durable bags by the “seat of her pants.” She doesn’t use a pattern: they are original. The best part is you can customize them.  She has different websites that she orders fabric from and she can even do a custom design.

When my mom and I went to check out what she had, I was blown away. I have a friend that has one and I loved her bag. I asked her where she got it and she gave me Jen’s card. My mom wasn’t sure if she was going to get one, but she saw some fabric that she loved and a design she really appreciated and ordered one. I picked one from some that were already completed. It is big enough to hold my wallet, planner, a small digital camera, card reader, and a few other items and it still has space!

If you happen to be in Kidron this weekend, stop by Lehman’s and find Jen. If you are interested and won’t be around this weekend, you can find her at www.SeatOfMyPants.etsy.com.
