They say that when life hands you lemons, the good thing to do is make lemonade. This first week of September was more like being given so many lemons I was tempted to hire a couple of little kids to run the stand, sell the franchise to their parents, buy the lemon grove, and tout lemon futures on Wall Street.

The tractor being out of commission (something electrical) prevents me from doing the large-scale mowing that would keep my land well groomed as I prefer it. The lack of an extra pair of hands to help work on the cabinetry and woodworking means that the finish of the interior of the house is going painfully slowly and at times, feels overwhelming. But I try to see these as temporary circumstances. And temporary things change; but the truly important things? Those are moving in good directions.

The Governor of our state announced that in order to make up for a budget shortfall of hundreds of millions of dollars, there will be severe measures taken, the most immediate of them to state employees, a 10% cut in our incomes. We are to dodge the bullet called "layoffs," (at least, for now) but those of us already living on a very narrow margin will have to find a way to tighten our financial outflow ever further...

At right around January 4th (the 6-month mark of this journey) I took stock of how I was doing with my food, supplies and expenses. So far, I'm doing very well with canned goods, not quite as well but still pretty good with frozen things, passable in the personal care and household cleaners, but nearly back to the dreaded "S" word (shopping) for paper goods.
