I am using the Akismet, but having just launched this site, it isn't in full effect yet. We are certainly using the Sidebar widget, very nice and simplifies matters considerably. Get the Akismet plugin, its a wonderfull spam comment blocker. Also, there is a nice plugin called "Sidebar Widget" it makes it easy to manage the sidebar content.
